Title Intestinal Mucus and Immunity – Ways the Microbiota can Impact the Host
Speaker Robert R Jenq, M.D.
The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center
Language English

Abstract:
“The mechanisms linking the gut microbiota and immune-related outcomes in cancer patients remain incompletely understood. Our group has focused on the mucus-degrading subset of intestinal bacteria and their relationship to diet and the intestinal barrier. We are also beginning to study T cell recognition of bacterial antigens using a new tool we have developed to screen antigens against T cell receptors.”

Biosketch:
Dr. Jenq is a medical oncologist with more than 15 years of experience specializing in the care of adults undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation. He also leads a research group focused on how the microbiome can be targeted to improve patient outcomes. He received his MD from Oregon Health and Sciences University and completed his clinical training at Duke University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is currently an Associate Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Departments of Genomic Medicine and Stem Cell Transplantation and Cell Therapy, where he also founded and directs the Microbiome Core Facility.
