New Member – Dr. Joaquim Caner

March 17, 2025

Introducing new member of Bio2Q

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Joaquim Caner as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bio-1 Core of Bio2Q.

The greeting from Dr. Caner is as follows.

“After transitioning from medicinal chemistry to photocatalysis, I am excited to join the Bio2Q research community under the leadership of Prof. Makoto Arita to explore the integration of organic chemistry with cutting-edge biomedical applications. My current research focuses on synthesizing potential gut microbiota-derived ‘dark matter’ metabolites, their precursors, and stable isotope-labeled (SIL) analogs. These compounds are crucial for metabolomics, drug discovery, and mechanistic studies, helping to uncover metabolic pathways, trace biochemical transformations, and enhance our understanding of health and disease.

In particular, stable isotope-labeled compounds serve as powerful probes that enable high- resolution metabolic flux analysis and quantitative metabolomics, offering unparalleled insights into the dynamics of metabolic processes.

By integrating chemical synthesis with bioinformatics, computational modeling, and biomedical sciences, I aim to enhance the structural elucidation and analysis of relevant biologically active compounds to later design a new class of gut microbiota-related drugs.

I look forward to collaborating with interdisciplinary teams at Bio2Q to expand the applications of my research. By combining experimental and computational approaches, we aim to refine our understanding of gut microbiota-host crosstalk, ultimately contributing to Bio2Q’s mission of advancing metabolomics and biomedical sciences.”
