Keio University Human Biology-Microbiome-Quantum Research Center (WPI-Bio2Q) held a seminar as follows.
15:00 -16:30 November 13, 2025
Venue: JKiC1F, Shinanomachi Campus, Keio University
Speaker:
Alex Rigort, Ph.D.
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Germany
Title: “A journey through Cryo-FIB evolution and its current use”
Abstract:
“This lecture will present an overview of cryo-focused ion beam (Cryo-FIB) technology, tracing its evolution from a challenging niche technique to a key method in cryo-EM sample preparation. I will highlight early limitations, major developments, and recent contributions that have improved precision and cryo-FIB workflow efficiency. Lastly, I will highlight a new vacuum sample transfer option and discuss how it will further streamline cryo-sample preparation, as we continue to drive innovation in cryo-tomography workflows.”
Alex Rigort currently works in product marketing and development for Thermo Fisher Scientific and holds a guest researcher position at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. He has pioneered the use of cryo-focused ion beam instruments for cryo-tomography at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and has long-standing experience in cryo-electron microscopy.
