Introducing new member of Bio2Q

We are excited to welcome Dr. Scott Behie as a Director of Research Programs of Bio2Q.

“Hello everyone! I’m excited and honored to join Bio2Q as the new Director of Research Programs.

My scientific passion lies in uncovering the hidden narratives that microorganisms tell—through their chemistry, their genetic signatures, and their roles within the complex ecosystems they inhabit. As we all know, microbes are fascinating not only for their diversity but also for the essential services they provide across every environment, from soil and plants to human and animal hosts. They shape ecological balance, drive nutrient cycles, and hold untapped potential for therapeutic innovation.

During my PhD at Brock University, I explored microbial ecology and nutrient flow in plant-microbe interactions, examining how microbes contribute to plant health and nutrient acquisition. My work extended into genetics and chemistry, where I became particularly fascinated by how microbial communities coordinate to influence broader systems. This interest deepened during my postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley, where I applied my interdisciplinary background to study the structure, genetics, function, and chemistry of natural microbiomes—specifically with an eye toward discovering bioactive small molecules and understanding how microbiomes functionally operate in natural environments.

Since 2020, I’ve served as a Scientific Editor at Cell, and became a Senior Scientific Editor after just 4 years. This role has given me invaluable insight into the publishing process, scientific storytelling, and the strategies that increase the visibility and impact of scientific work. This role has allowed me to engage with cutting-edge life science research across diverse fields and support scientists at every stage—from experimental design to manuscript development and dissemination. That experience has shaped how I think about communicating science, not just as a technical process, but as a narrative art that connects ideas, inspires collaboration, and elevates discovery.

My overall scientific journey has made me a strong advocate for cross-disciplinary research. I find that the most transformative science often emerges at intersections, where ecology meets molecular biology, or where microbial chemistry illuminates new paths in biotechnology, for example.

Equally important to me is how we share our discoveries. I am passionate about scientific communication, both as a tool for collaboration and as a means of making science more accessible and impactful. Whether it’s shaping compelling grant narratives, crafting manuscripts, or building platforms that amplify our collective voice, I see storytelling as essential to advancing science and its influence on the world.

As I step into this new role at Bio2Q, I look forward to collaborating with each of you, supporting your work, helping to elevate the institute’s research profile, and ensuring that the incredible science happening here resonates widely. Just as microbial systems thrive through cooperation and information exchange, I hope to foster a strong sense of connection and shared purpose within our community.

Thank you for welcoming me to Bio2Q, I’m excited to work with everyone.

Scott Behie”
